  2.     This describes how to start using the World Factbook.
  3.  
  4. QuickStart:
  5.  
  6.     1. Open the "MAC" folder.
  7.  
  8.     2. Choose one of these two methods to access the World Factbook:
  9.           a) HyperCard:
  10.                    double click on the "World Factbook 1995" icon.
  11.  
  12.           b) TextWare:
  13.                    double click on the "WFB.TWC" icon.
  14.  
  15.                    (Features full text, plus appendices, consular notes, 
  16.                     background notes, fast searches, photos, maps, charts,
  17.                     and the ability to print the maps/images! )
  18.                     Start a search by pressing the space bar, double click on
  19.                     an item in the "Hit List" window, and use the "Match button
  20.                     find the text searched for.

  23.          Help is available under the "Help" Menu
  24.          Click on the astronaut for additional help!

  28.     * Image Printing Note: Choose "Black&White" in the print dialog

  36. Detailed information about getting around in this program:

  38. The First "Main" screen allows you to choose how to access the information 
  39. about the 266 world entities.
  40. Click on the astronaut for additional help!
  41.  
  42. 7 choices:
  43.  
  44. Ñ (1) Photographs. 
  45. View 220+ photographs from around the world.  See the countries up close!  
  46. Play a slide show of all the images (click the slide show button) or select 
  47. the image by name (scroll the list of images and click on the text to view).
  48.  
  49. Ñ (2) Maps/Flags.
  50. Access regional maps, detailed country maps, or flags for each country.  
  51. View a slide show of the flags, or scroll and click the list of countries.
  52.  
  53. Ñ (3)  Charts.
  54. See comparison charts and rankings of all 266 countries for 23 statistics 
  55. compiled by the CIA.  Click the slide show button to see them all or click 
  56. on the statistic text to view and inspect individual rankings.

  58. Ñ (4)  Travel Topics.
  59. Get detailed information compiled by the State Department on 31 special topics 
  60. and the activities of 39 terror groups.
  61.  
  62. Ñ (5) Search.
  63. Access any one of the 266 countries directly, search for a country, search all 
  64. the text for a search string. (Macintosh only: switch out to TextWare rapid 
  65. search and retrieval.)

  67. Ñ (6) Help.
  68. Provides tips and techniques for using this program.
  69.  
  70. Ñ (7) Search the world geographically by clicking on one of the 7 continents 
  71. on the Main screen.  This has each country's geographic location, size etc. 
  72. in relation to its neighbors and allows access that country's text description 
  73. as compiled by the CIA and State department information, as well as its 
  74. Map and Flag, and Photographs (if available).

  76. At the bottom of each screen (except main) is standard set of options, 
  77. including a way of getting back to the main screen.

  79. Tips and Techniques:
  80. How do I find something in this program:
  81. (searching for specific information)
  82.  
  83.    How to do a general search:
  84.        From "Main" press the "Search" button, now press the button
  85.        "Global Search" enter the text you want to search
  86.        for and go from there.  An example would be that you know "Mugabe"
  87.        is the leader of some country -- but you don't know which one.
  88.        Search for Mugabe to find out!
  89.  
  90.    How to do a specific search:
  91.       - You want to know the ranking of Burkina's death rate in the world.
  92.            Select "Charts" from "Main", click on "Death rate" in the
  93.            list.  Now click on the "Find within Card" button and type Burkina.
  94.            The High to Low list will highlight and scroll down to the entry if
  95.            Burkina is ranked.
  96.       - You want to know the date that Kazakhstan was established as 
  97.            a country.  From "Main": click on the "Search" ,  now click on 
  98.            "Global Search" and enter Kazakhstan. 
  99.            Now click on the "Find within Card" button and type Independence
  100.            The text will scroll down to reveal the independence date for
  101.            Kazakhstan.

  103. Using the "Go Back" button for repeated accessing of information 
  104.  from the same screen.  Some examples:
  105.            From the "Main" screen click on a continent such as "Africa",
  106.            Click on "Southern Africa", now click on a country button.
  107.            View the information/maps etc.  Click "Go Back" to return to 
  108.            "Southern Africa", now click on another country button.
  109.  
  110.            From the "Main" screen click on the "Charts" button, now scroll
  111.            the list of comparison statistics/charts and select one to inspect
  112.            by clicking on its text.  Read the rankings/search/view the charts.
  113.            Now click on "Go Back" to return to the "Charts" listing.

  116. Switch out to TextWare external searches for quicker, more comprehensive 
  117. search capabilities.  This requires more RAM free (up to 2 megabytes additional.)  
  118. You can access TextWare separately.
  119.  
  120. Features:
  121.     * Information on 266 countries, territories etc. compiled by the CIA.
  122.     * Extracted numerical rankings for 23 statistics from the CIA
  123.        with bar charts.  Statistics include: population, growth, economics, etc.
  124.     * Information from the State Department on most countries, including:
  125.            Entry Requirements (documentation needed to get into a country),
  126.            Travel Advisories (what to watch out for when you get there),
  127.            Consular notes (general notes on the country),
  128.            and other:
  129.               General Information topics (HIV, Adoption, Abduction, etc.), and
  130.               Terror Group Profiles.
  131.     * Maps for the 266 countries, territories etc.
  132.     * 23 Region Maps.
  133.     * 16 Regional Maps + world time zones.
  134.     * 220+ photos from selected countries.
  135.     * Various search tools.
  136.     * Help.
  137.     * Ability to Launch TextWare Retrieval Software.
